Presentations David Simpson SQL Optimization & Access Paths: What’s Old & New - David Simpson Some things with SQL optimization have been the same for a long time. Others change are changing rapidly with the introduction of Version 8 and 9. This presentation reviews the basics of access path analysis with extended discussion of what’s new in the latest releases of DB2. The appropriate place for Visual Explain and Optimization Service Center will also be covered. Let’s talk about what’s old, what’s new and how to make the optimizer work for you.

Bryan Paulsen DB2 9 for z/OS – John Deere’s ESP Experience – Bryan Paulsen John Deere participated in the IBM Early Support Program (ESP) for DB2 9 for z/OS. This presentation will introduce you to some of the new features available in DB2 9 that we tested at John Deere. These features include the DB2 9 migration path, the new Universal Tablespaces, Clone Tables, Partitioning by Growth, Index Compression, Not Logged Tables, Roles and Trusted Context and several utility enhancements. You will gain a general understanding of these features along with some items of interest that we found while testing. Just for fun, I’ll compare some of the DB2 9 features with the equipment we make at John Deere.

DB2 BACKUP SYSTEM and RESTORE SYSTEM Enhancements – Bryan Paulsen DB2 Version 8 introduced the BACKUP SYSTEM and RESTORE SYSTEM utilities that enable you to backup and to recover the DB2 environment using dasd volume level backups. DB2 9 further enhanced these utilities through the introduction of incremental FlashCopy support, object level recovery using the volume level dumps and DFSMShsm tape management for offloading the backups to tape. This presentation will not only introduce you to the basics of the BACKUP SYSTEM and RESTORE SYSTEM utilities but will also cover the new DB2 9 enhancements. This presentation contains many colorful pictures that will help you to understand the new constructs and to help you correctly setup the environment. Along the way you will learn about copy pools, copy pool backup storage groups, RBLPs and SYSPITRs. If you are responsible for DB2 backup and recovery you will definitely want to take a look at the new DB2 9 BACKUP SYSTEM and RESTORE SYSTEM utilities.
